Two Lancaster County shelters housing homeless veterans will be getting funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to increase the number of beds in their facilities, it was announced Wednesday.

Lancaster’s Tabor Community Services, Inc. received $114, 245 for 10 additional beds for homeless veterans, and Pennsylvania American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans Corp. in Ephrata received $57,123 for five additional beds.

In all, five Pennsylvania community organizations received $1.15 million.

Three other community organizations in the state designated for funding are Shalom House in Harrisburg, $68,457 for six beds; Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center, $224, 228 for 30 beds to help women veterans; and Fresh Start Foundation, Coatesville $685,470 for 60 beds.

On Wednesday, Secretary of Veteran Affairs Jim Nicholson announced $24 million in grants for homeless programs in 37 states. Ninety-two community-based groups will receive the VA funding.

The VA has the largest integrated network of homeless assistance programs in the country.

The VA estimates fewer than 200,000 veterans may be homeless on an average night which represents a 20 percent reduction during the past six years.
