Together You Make TLC What It Is

August 31, 2017

As we approach the Labor Day holiday, its picnics, parades and in Lancaster County its art shows and auctions, I am moved to reflect a little deeper on the holiday.  Especially as we all as a nation are riveted to the events in Houston.  Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

In today’s context I am moved not only by paid laborers, and of course at the top of the list are the great individuals that make up the super team here at TLC, but also the volunteers who, for no wage, work tirelessly and contribute much. We witness each day, through whatever media you choose, the many acts of volunteerism going on in and around Houston.  Today I also want to acknowledge TLC’s many volunteers, who in the  last year alone worked over 4000 hours for us at TLC. Whatever their purpose---mentoring, cleaning, painting, driving, babysitting, working the front desk or countless other tasks; and working singly or as a group---suffice it to say without their efforts, we simply could not function at the level the community and our participants have come to expect. So on this Labor Day weekend I thank you one and all, the paid fantabulous staff we have and the superhero volunteers. Together you make TLC what it is—a safe place to allow people the opportunity to achieve their goal of permanent housing, a right all should have in our country. To all of you---Happy Labor Day.
