Why I Volunteer & What TLC Means To Me
I have been a volunteer with TLC since July of 2016.
We all have our personal reasons for wanting to reach out and help when we can, and this was something I had been considering for some time. I can safely say that it has been an eye opening two years. It can be very easy for folks to judge and give advice from a distance. But being here on a regular basis has taught me that the truth is one should NEVER judge another until they have walked a day in their shoes. Unless you have lived in the cycle of poverty or suffered with addiction or mental illness, or any of the myriad of reasons why someone may be faced with homelessness, you honestly cannot judge or imagine what they are going through. I have seen time and time again the gratitude of those we help and the sense of accomplishment they feel when they succeed with the second chance we give them. When they begin to feel empowered to move forward in a positive way, it is so wonderful to witness.
I am proud to be a part of this great team of people who work so hard to help them get to that point. There is nothing like the hug from a little one who is so excited to get new sneakers or a school backpack, and even the trying days are ok, because ultimately I know that these little ones have a bed to sleep in, a meal to enjoy and a stable environment to make them feel safe. Helping here at TLC is the best decision I have ever made.
