Supportive Services for veteran families

Starting in October 2013 the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program has been operating from Tabor’s TLC building at 105 E. King Street in downtown Lancaster. SSVF offers short-term intensive case management for eligible veterans and their families who are without housing (in shelter, a vehicle, or living outdoors) or who are at imminent risk of losing their housing (with a notice of eviction or those doubled up with friends or family).

The program’s mission is to assist veteran households who are currently experiencing homelessness with rapid re-housing services so they may quickly regain stability in housing, as well as to provide services to those at risk of losing housing to prevent them from entering homelessness. The program operates with a “housing first” philosophy and is fully funded by the US Department of Veteran Affairs through a subcontract with Opportunity House in Reading, PA.

In addition to housing counseling services, SSVF assists veterans by connecting them to VA benefits and programs, and to public benefits and community resources. Assistance is also available with employment, transportation, credit and financial services, education, and child care. Temporary financial assistance is available for a short-term period and is provided on an as needed basis to assist households transitioning to permanent housing.

To be eligible for SSVF services, there must be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces present within the household (single veterans constitute a household as well as families) who has a discharge status that is anything but dishonorable. Household income cannot exceed 50% of the area median income, and the household must be currently experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless (with a notice of eviction).

Veterans within Lancaster County may be referred to SSVF services by any agency or individual by calling (717) 397-0156, option 6. Veterans may also self-refer by phone or in person at the TLC building (105 E. King St. Lancaster).
